Abstract: This work is the result of discussions produced within the Education and Contemporary Curricular Unit of the Department of Education and Psychology of the University of Aveiro. It is configured as a literature review study, which has as its main objective a reflection on the role of the school in the face of the dissemination of fake news in media/technological contexts of contemporary society. The present study also aims to discuss the need to adopt critical media education in the use of digital technologies in schools as a mechanism to combat the phenomenon of fake news. In this sense, the focus of the study is based on the possibility of critical media education as a mechanism to combat fake news and misinformation that students experience in today's society. The school, as a social training institution, must enable the integration of critical media education, which involves several skills, such as critical thinking, so that students can appropriate, interpret and critically analyze the content produced in the media.
