Abstract: This article aims to analyze and problematize the history of Recife's carnival in the period 1955-1964. At that time, organizing Momo's reign became a political priority, as administrators believed it necessary to create public policies capable of resolving an issue that had been highlighted in the city's newspapers for decades: 'saving Recife's carnival from decay'. The 1950s are a milestone for historiography that analyzes Recife's carnival. Soon after the end of the carnival celebrations of 1955, the city's City Hall, through a bill authored by Councilor Antônio Batista de Sousa, tried to take over the organization of the party. In this context, in 1955, Mayor Djair Brindeiro sanctioned law No. 3,346, of June 7th, making the city's carnival official, which began to be organized by the Department of Documentation and Culture (DDC). The law aimed to promote carnival focused on tradition, thus preserving the frevo, maracatus and caboclinho clubs. Among the measures proposed by the law, financial aid was provided for blocks, samba schools and other Carnival associations that contributed to the animation and consolidation of Recife's carnival. Thus, in this research we analyze political and social disputes and prohibitions on practices considered subversive, which were common in Momo's days. We also sought to highlight the resistance of the people who equated themselves with any type of rule or prohibition.
