Abstract: ABSTRACT: Geographical science aims to understand how work transforms geographic space and produces diverse political, economic and social relations, which imply different ways of life and societies. In the context of school education, it contributes to the understanding of social transformations produced by the capitalist mode of production and its extensions, in economic policies that influence the way of life and social relations of work. This article is the result of theoretical reflections mediated by bibliographical research and its main objective is to motivate reflections on the category of work, as an object of knowledge, in school teaching of geography. In this sense, it seeks to understand how the Thematic Unit World of Work is organized in the curricular structure of the geography discipline, highlighting the importance of the geography textbook as a motivator of discussions and reflections around the category of work. It points out criteria for selection and choice of didactic works to assist geography teachers in adopting a textbook that meets the needs of teaching and learning and collaborates in the formation of the student's critical and political thinking in relation to the world of work. It highlights the importance of teaching geography in schools for the development of citizenship among students, for the development of different interpretations of reality, including the various dimensions of society, which stimulate thought and real discussions, around politics, the economy and the environment, among others, contributing to the student recognizing themselves as participants in the process of transforming society.
