Abstract: This article presents the results of an educational project developed with 5th-grade students at Professor Antônio Monteiro School, in Aracati, Ceará, Brazil, aiming to analyze the contributions of the school newspaper “O Pão” to the development of students’ reading, writing, and protagonism. The proposal involved the implementation of contextualized language practices, integrating reading, text production, revision, and dissemination of content through printed and digital editions of the newspaper. The adopted methodology was grounded in theoretical perspectives on literacy, multiliteracies, and meaningful learning, combining theoretical study with the stages of producing the newspaper, from content selection to layout and publication. The results indicate significant improvements in students’ autonomy, authorship, and linguistic skills, as well as the strengthening of relationships among school, family, and the broader community. It was also noted that integrating local culture into the educational process made learning more meaningful and engaging. It is concluded that the school newspaper constitutes an effective pedagogical strategy to promote reading and writing as social practices, contributing to the formation of critical, participatory, and socially aware students.
