Abstract: The garden of death can be interpreted as the subversion of the biblical Eden. Although, in the works that make up the corpus, we have empirical gardens, we also work on the notion of the symbolic of this garden of death, an objective to be fulfilled based on the definition of island proposed by Dulce María Loynaz in an unnamed poem. Thus, the lyric becomes part of the theoretical framework, subverting, in the article, the notions of things and spaces, as the divine garden is subverted into a garden of death by the writers. Our corpus is constituted by the Cuban narrative Jardín, by Dulce María Loynaz, and by the short story “Amor”, present in Laços de familia, by Clarice Lispector. Thus, we aim to understand how these gardens – material and subjective – cross the lives of the respective protagonists Bárbara and Ana. The theoretical basis, in turn, is constituted by the mentioned poetry, Julia Kristeva' and Laurent Jenny’s notion of intertextuality, as well as the meaning of symbols by Jean Chevelier and Alain Gheerbrant and the comum dictionary in Grande dicionário Houaiss, from the online space named UOL.
