Abstract: This article explores the impact of asylum in Brazil, considering its historical trajectory and impact on Brazilian culture, society, and health. It begins with a theoretical analysis of the events that led to the adoption of refugee status in Brazil, which was the result of European movements aimed at integrating and accommodating post-war populations. Next, this perspective is combined with practical findings drawn from the national reality of refugee reception and how this status is enshrined in legislation. Although refugee status is a clear expression of the humanitarian stance of a social- democratic government, it also faces the obstacles posed by Brazil’s pluralistic and heterogeneous reality. The fully developed structure of a Common Market and its circulatory facilities, as found in the European Union, do not exist in the South American context, which makes asylum, and its resulting repercussions, fundamentally different between the two regions. By comparing both contexts, while taking into account their respective scales and resources, it is possible to understand asylum as a necessary tool, yet one subject to restrictions and filters designed to ensure the achievement of its objectives.
