O inglês em alerta: a expansão do ensino de língua inglesa no século XIX
Ao analisarmos o status de língua
da ciência ocupado pelo inglês no século XXI,
é difícil, para um leigo, imaginar que a língua
inglesa precisou travar verdadeiras lutas pela
criação e manutenção de seu espaço, frente à
hegemonia da língua francesa, vista, até meados
do século XX, como sinônimo de civilidade e de
instrumento a ser utilizado para consolidar os
modelos de moral a serem seguidos, não só pela
Europa, como por todo o mundo ocidental, que
se espelhava na França para mostrar polidez e
modernidade. A língua francesa, dessa forma,
no século XIX, tinha seu status assegurado,
sendo reconhecida como língua de acesso ao
conhecimento e à cultura, o que fez com que o
ensino deste idioma não precisasse de maiores
explicações e justificativas. O mesmo não
acontecia com o inglês, que, embora tivesse
uma utilidade comprovada, ainda disputava
espaço educacional junto ao francês. Diante
deste cenário, este capítulo tem como principal
objetivo retratar as lutas travadas pela língua
inglesa no período oitocentista, e que foram
primordiais para a expansão do ensino deste
idioma no século XX. Para melhor ilustras as
lutas aqui mencionadas, foram analisados
prefácios de alguns compêndios do século XIX
para o ensino de inglês, bem como jornais e a
legislação oitocentista.

Abstract:
Since English occupies the status
of the language of science in the 21st century, it is
difficult for a layman to imagine that this language
had to wage real struggles for the creation
and maintenance of its space, in view of the
hegemony of the French language, understood,
until the middle of the twentieth century, as a
synonym of civility and an instrument to be used
to consolidate the moral models which had to
be followed, not only by Europe, but throughout
the western world, which mirrored in France to
show politeness and modernity. Thus, in the
nineteenth century, the French language had its
status assured, being recognized as a language
of access to knowledge and culture, which meant
that the teaching of this language did not need
further explanation and justification. The same
was not verified when we talked about English
teaching. Even knowing English had proved to
be important for business, it was still trying to
conquer a space due to the French hegemony.
Given this scenario, this chapter has as its main objective to portray the struggles waged
by the English language in the nineteenth century, and which were primordial for the
expansion of the teaching of this language in the twentieth century. To better illustrate
the struggles mentioned here, we have analyzed prefaces of some nineteenth-century
textbooks for English teaching, as well as newspapers and the legislation.
