Abstract: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Omega-3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acid with anti-inflammatory and hypotriglyceridemic properties, which may help improve the risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome. The methodology used for this study was a integrative literature review, with article searches in the databases of the Virtual Health Library (BVS), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Articles published between 2013 and 2023, with full text available, published in indexed journals and in Portuguese and English, were considered. A total of 611 articles were identified, of which 26 were selected for final analysis. The results indicate that omega-3 may help reduce obesity and improve the risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome, such as insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and elevated blood triglyceride levels. Additionally, omega-3 may help prevent the development of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. In conclusion, omega-3 may be an effective therapeutic option for the treatment of metabolic syndrome. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the optimal dosage and duration of treatment, as well as its long-term effects. Furthermore, it is important to note that omega-3 should not be used as a substitute for other recommended therapies for the treatment of metabolic syndrome.
