O HOMEM E OS LIVROS: OS PRINCÍPIOS NORTEADORES DA LITERATURA DE HOWARD FAST
Howard Fast (1914-2003) foi um dos mais prolíficos escritores norte-americanos do século XX. Notório por seu envolvimento com o Partido Comunista Americano entre as décadas de 1940 e 1950, acabou sofrendo com a perseguição política anticomunista do macarthismo durante este período. Um dos traços mais distintivos de sua obra literária é a sua preferência pelo gênero do romance histórico, por meio do qual frequentemente chamava atenção para questões sociais de grande relevância tanto para o passado em questão, quanto para o seu tempo presente, particularmente durante a primeira fase de sua carreira como escritor, até seu desligamento do Partido. Em minha pesquisa de doutorado, abordei três de suas principais obras, que tratam de diferentes períodos da história americana, buscando entrever os conceitos que Fast possuía e buscava veicular acerca destes episódios, da formação dos Estados Unidos enquanto nação, e do sentido da história em geral. O presente trabalho enquadra-se dentro da pesquisa que conduzi no doutorado, na medida em que tem por objetivo examinar, a partir da produção literária e teórica de Howard Fast, quais eram os principais princípios que orientavam a sua escrita. Entre eles, pode-se citar o comprometimento com ideais do materialismo dialético marxista e da vertente literária do realismo soviético, uma profunda identificação com os valores fundacionais de liberdade e democracia da nação americana, e a vinculação a uma tradição judaica de radicalismo secular.

Abstract:
Howard Fast (1914-2003) was one of the most prolific American writers of the twentieth century. Notorious for his involvement with the Communist Party USA in the 1940s and 1950s, he was persecuted during this period by McCarthyism’s anti-Communist policies. One of the most distinctive aspects of his literary works is his option for historical novel genre, by means of which he frequently pointed out social issues of great relevance both for the past in question and for his own present, particularly during the first phase of his career as a writer, up to his departure from the Party. In my doctorate research, I focused on three of his most important novels, which deal with different periods of American history, aiming to identify the main concepts Fast had and tried to communicate through these episodes, about the constitution of the United States as a nation, and the general meaning of history. The present article inserts itself into the doctorate research I have developed, in the sense that it aims to discern the main principles that oriented Howard Fast’s writing, through the analysis of his literary and theoretical writings. Among them stand out his commitment to the ideals of Marxist dialectical materialism and the literary school of soviet socialist realism, a profound identification with the American founding values of liberty and democracy, and the association with a tradition of Jewish secular radicalism.
