Abstract: This article aims to present a literary analysis of the almost homonymous short stories The Black Cat (1843) by Edgar Allan Poe and The Black Rooster (2016) by Cristiane Sobral, through a comparative reading of narratives written nearly two centuries apart. A constant tension is perceived in both texts regarding the narrators’ views on “the many possibilities of death” that characterize European and Brazilian cultures. We address the animalistic element represented in Poe’s tale by the figure of the cat and its symbolic association with bad luck and mysticism, in contrast to the rooster in Sobral’s story, which carries the opposite symbolism and leads us into the realm of the fantastic. Based on the premise that the two tales present some differences, we also explore their similarities, considering symbolism, narrative context, and the emotional impact evoked by each author.
