Abstract: Vitamin D (VD) is a fat-soluble hormone involved in the physiological, immunological and biochemical modulation of the body, providing protection against systemic pathologies, including chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Depression, on the other hand, is the main NCD within mental health, and has been gaining global public health proportions. However, the pathophysiology of depression is still being studied, with a consensus that changes in neurotransmitters of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis are involved, either in their quantity or action in the synaptic cleft. Another factor under study is the relationship between depression and the immune system, especially in pro-inflammatory processes, where it increases inflammatory cytokines, reaching the CNS and causing morphofunctional changes in nerve cells. Therefore, studies that associate VD with mental disorders such as depression are increasingly present, showing that patients with low VD dosage and reduced expression of its specific receptor may result in decreased synthesis of hormones related to mood and increased systemic inflammatory state. Finally, studies related to VD, depression and inflammation have been important to elucidate the pathophysiology of depression and its treatment
