Abstract: Learning mathematics has been one of the greatest difficulties for students, and this is a situation that spans decades, passing through different generations, at all stages of the schooling process. In basic education it is common to observe, among students, discussions about this curricular component, stating that it is "difficult to understand, abstract, and meaningless", and although it seems like a cliché, this reality is still latent in modernity. The general objective of this study is to analyze the importance of mathematics in education, and its role in the formation of critical and participatory individuals, considering mathematics as a science capable of providing students with the means to fully develop their autonomy and the ability to form opinions. The research is classified as qualitative, especially by the problem presented and the approach. According to Sampieri (2013) the process occurs through the interpretive method. For Gil (2018) qualitative research has a subject relationship with the real world, which involves an approximation between the object (of analysis) and subjectivity, in order to collect and describe. The results were significant from a qualitative standpoint. It is understood that Mathematics needs to be taught using stimuli of the student's capacity for logical investigation, making him reason. Consequently, the basic task of the teacher is to develop logical reasoning, critical thinking and creativity supported not only by reflection on the knowledge acquired by the science in question, but also on its applications to technology and social progress.
