Abstract: Introduction: Atrial fibrillation is a heart arrhythmia characterized by irregular contractions in the atrium of the heart. Clinical outcomes of atrial fibrillation in overweight and obese patients may be severe and include increased risk of cardiovascular complications and mortality. Among the preventive and therapeutic measures that can be adopted are weight loss, lifestyle changes, blood pressure control, diabetes mellitus treatment, and the use of antiarrhythmic drugs. In addition, the adoption of nutritional therapies such as the Mediterranean diet is important for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases due to its cardioprotective characteristic. Objective: Identify the effects of the Mediterranean diet as nutritional therapy of individuals suffering from obesity and atrial fibrillation. Methods: This is an integrative review. The searches were carried out between August and September 2023 in the databases PubMed and BVS. The criteria for inclusion were publications with text and translations in the Portuguese, English and Spanish languages in their entirety, published between the years 2018-2023 and of the type controlled and randomized clinical trials. As exclusion criteria articles that do not have affinity with the theme of atrial fibrillation and obesity associated with the Mediterranean diet and clinical protocols, articles that have evaluated pregnant women and articles that associated atrial fibrillation with diseases such as diabetes mellitus, stroke and diseases of the respiratory system. Results and Discussion: A total of 866 articles were found in the databases PubMed and Virtual Library in Health, 29 of which matched the criteria applied. Concluding considerations: The evaluated studies have shown that overweight and obesity are considered as a risk factor for the emergence of FA and complications during the application of treatment protocols such as anticoagulant therapy and other ways to treat cardiovascular diseases, among them, the Mediterranean diet has shown positive results in the treatment of these individuals. The Mediterranean diet facilitates weight loss and the improvement of the picture of atrial fibrillation at the stage of hospitalization or clinical follow-up.
