Abstract: The main goal of this article is to analyze the themes of displacement and memory in the novel The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis by Portuguese writer José Saramago.Memory serves as the guiding thread of the novel, appearing in various passages and weaving recollections throughout the narrative. The novel consistently presents memory to the reader, authentically building its position within the world shown to Ricardo Reis. It survives in the memory of places, historical contexts, and intertextuality. Thus, displacement and memory are intertwined, coexisting within this work of fiction. This study aims to explore the novel's fragments of geographical and literary displacement, as well as memory, confirming that their existence is indeed the structure of this emblematic Portuguese novel. The research is primarily bibliographic, with key references including Andrade (2009), Gobbi (1999), Ventura (2006), Cella; Fioruci; Salomão (2013), Celestino (2016), Gomes (2004), Soares (2006), and others. Based on these references, articles, and books, this study gained the knowledge necessary to identify and understand the presence of displacement and memory in this work of Portuguese literature.
