• Abstract: Introduction: The process of deinstitutionalization of people with mental disorders has become a fundamental part of recovering their citizenship. Therefore, the family becomes considered an essential ally in the care process. However, depending on the way each family organizes itself to provide this assistance, as well as the support received, this experience can be accompanied by implications for the life of that family, especially the main caregiver. Objective: To understand the implications for the life of a caregiver who takes care of a family member with a mental disorder. Methods: This is an integrative literature review. Data were collected in scientific databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and Electronic Journals of Psychology (Pepsic). For data collection, the following descriptors were used: “caregiver”, “family”, “mental disorders” and “overload”. Results: The care process can be accompanied by physical and emotional overload, financial impacts, and can generate social isolation. Final considerations: More reflections on caregiver care are necessary, as well as the development of care strategies, with the aim of minimizing the physical, psychological, emotional and social implications.
