Abstract: Understanding the phenomenon of digital culture is crucial for contemplating both professional training and the exercise of one’s profession in the contemporary labour market. Acknowledging the importance of grasping digital culture as a social phenomenon—its implications and its entanglements with everyday life—we examined how fifth-semester students in the Bachelor’s programme in Economics conceive of digital culture and which characteristics they invoke to represent what we term digital culture. Data were gathered using two open-ended questions: the first invited students to articulate their understanding of the concept, and the second requested examples that illustrated that understanding. The corpus produced by fifteen participants was subjected to content analysis (Bardin, 2016). The results indicate that, although the students do not articulate a theoretically grounded definition of digital culture, they do comprehend the phenomenon through their lived experience: seven categories in which the phenomenon was perceived and six categories of illustrative elements were identified. The most prominent category in the definitions offered was “Digital practices and behaviours,” whereas in the illustrative examples the most salient category was “Social networks and communication applications.” We conclude that the students possess a multifaceted perception of digital culture which aligns with a general, non-specialised understanding of culture (Williams, 1992). However, this multifaceted perception may reflect a fragmented view of the reality in which they are embedded, potentially hindering their capacity to consider key elements in shaping their worldview and in proposing solutions to problems arising in their professional practice.
