O COMÉRCIO E A EVOLUÇÃO ESPACIAL DAS ÁREAS CENTRAIS DAS PEQUENAS CIDADES
A vida urbana depende do comércio; esta atividade promove contatos e trocas que vão além do simples ato de comprar produtos - é interativa e produz uma relação social mais ampla.
Os centros das cidades tem sido objeto de estudo e hoje em dia esta área passa por processos de gentrificação, nobilitação, renovação, reabilitação e animação que procuram devolver a estas áreas o papel de comando económico e de vida social que dá sentido e razão de ser à cidade. Como exemplo, apresentamos a zona central e a dinâmica comercial de uma pequena localidade (Portalegre), como ela se alterou para responder, mais ou menos eficazmente, às transformações mencionadas. Devido à vulgarização do acesso à informação e ao aumento da mobilidade, as populações, direta ou indiretamente, induziram à expansão comercial e à contração da dinâmica espacial do centro histórico desta localidade. Acompanhamos as mudanças cartograficamente, mas também justificamos como os aspetos demográficos e as pressões da sociedade pós-moderna, globalizada e marcadamente ocidental, se refletem no espaço urbano e como a atividade comercial é o fulcro dessas mudanças.

Abstract:
Urban life depends on commerce; this activity promotes contacts and exchanges that go beyond the simple act of buying products - it is interactive and produces a broader social relationship.
The town center has been the object of study, and nowadays it goes through processes of gentrification, nobilitation, renovation, rehabilitation and animation that seek out to return to these areas the role of economic command and social life that brings meaning and reason for being to the urban center. As an example, we present the central area and its commerce dynamics, in a small town (Portalegre), and how it has been changed, giving more or less effective answers to the transformations mentioned above. Due to widespread access to information and increased mobility, populations, directly or indirectly, induced commercial expansion and contraction of the spatial dynamics of the historical center of this locality. We follow the changes cartographically, but we also justify how the demographic aspects and pressures of postmodern society, globalized and markedly western one are reflected in urban space and how commercial activity is the fulcrum of these changes.
