Abstract: INTRODUCTION: There seems to be a paucity of studies on disordered eating behaviors (DEB’s) among bodybuilders and other groups of men, such as muscularity-oriented disordered eating, whose main characteristic is the change in dietary pattern to reduce body fat and gain muscle mass, simultaneously. OBJECTIVE: To verify the frequency of these behaviors in different male populations, considering age and sexual orientation. METHODS: This work is an integrative review of original articles published between 2018 and 2022, consulted in BVS, PubMed and Scielo in January 2023. Works related to the theme were included after a thorough reading of titles and abstracts. Duplicate works and reviews were excluded. RESULTS: a higher frequency of binge eating episodes was observed in non-competitive athletes (35% vs. 27%). Among men aged 18 to 24 years, 32.4% reported dieting to build muscle and 11.2% were concerned about weight and shape. The ideal of a muscular and thin male body was strongly related to disordered eating, more frequent in young adult men than in women (27.5% vs. 4.9%). Gay and bisexual boys participating in a cohort were 2.67 times more likely to follow restrictive diets, and 12.5 times more likely to be binge eaters. CONCLUSION: There is a need to conduct more studies on the subject, in addition to being important to train health professionals, such as nutritionists, regarding DEB’s that are quite common in clinical practice and can result in the development of eating disorders.
