Abstract: This abstract aims to understand the challenges and potentialities of family support during the hospitalization of elderly individuals at the Hospital Universitário Regional dos Campos Gerais (HURCG) in Ponta Grossa, Paraná. Supported by a legal framework established by the 1988 Federal Constitution and the Elderly Statute, the right to have a companion is guaranteed a recognized as essential to the patient’s well-being. However, the study shows that this responsibility falls mostly on women, reflect a gendered division of labor that naturalizes caregiving as female duty. Through a qualitative, descriptive, participatory, and exploratory research approach, followed by data collection through interviews and content analysis, the study highlights that the care of elderly patients in hospital is driven by emotional motivation such as love, gratitude, and responsibility. This results in physical an emotion strain, especially for women caregivers. Among the positive findings, the role of social work is emphasized as essential in ensuring rights, offering support, and coordinating with the social assistance network, and promoting humane care. The study concludes that family involvement is indispensable during hospitalization, contributing to stronger bonds a more humanized care. It also underscores the need for public policies to recognize caregiving as labor and promote a fair distribution of caregiving responsibilities among the State, society, and families.
