Abstract: Human and microbial life cannot exist without water, which is essential to all living organisms. Brazilian legislation prioritizes the protection and sustainable use of water as a means to ensure human survival and well-being. Conventionally, water treatment involves the removal of suspended particles followed by disinfection processes. However, in quilombola communities, access to safe water is often limited or does not follow conventional treatment methods. As a result, these communities must negotiate and advocate—with both governmental and non-governmental actors—for this fundamental right, which is vital not only for life itself but also for the preservation of their cultural identity, traditional practices, and ancestral knowledge.
