Abstract: Bariatric surgery is an effective intervention for treating severe obesity and its comorbidities. In Brazil, where obesity is prevalent, the number of surgeries has significantly increased. However, there are challenges such as complications and weight regain. Preoperative assessment is crucial, including optimizing glycemic control and screening for medical conditions. Preoperative weight loss is controversial but may be beneficial for certain patients. Very low-calorie diets may reduce surgical risk. Diabetes management requires a personalized approach. Mental and emotional health is also important, requiring a comprehensive psychological assessment. In the postoperative phase, adequate nutrition is essential to prevent deficiencies. Transitioning to liquid and solid foods requires specific guidance, as does identifying and preventing food intolerances. Behavioral strategies such as mindfulness and adopting a healthy lifestyle are crucial for maintaining long-term weight loss and promoting overall patient health after bariatric surgery.
