Abstract: Aquaculture has become a strategic sector for global food production, requiring the development of production systems that combine efficiency, animal health, and environmental sustainability. In this context, functional nutrition has emerged as a key approach to promote the health of cultured organisms and improve zootechnical performance. Among the nutritional additives used in aquaculture, probiotics and postbiotics have received increasing attention due to their beneficial effects on intestinal microbiota, immune responses, and system stability. Probiotics, defined as live microorganisms administered in adequate amounts, primarily act by modulating the intestinal microbiota and inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms, thereby improving nutrient utilization and increasing resistance to stress. Postbiotics, in turn, consist of microbial metabolites and cellular components and offer advantages related to greater stability, safety, and standardization of effects. This chapter discusses the conceptual foundations, mechanisms of action, and applications of probiotics and postbiotics in aquaculture, with emphasis on their contribution to intestinal health, productive performance, and sustainability of aquaculture systems. The integration of these nutritional strategies represents a promising alternative to reduce antibiotic dependence and to promote more responsible and efficient practices in aquaculture production.
