Abstract: Nutraceuticals comprise a range of bioactive compounds accumulated in food sources, which may include vitamins, phytochemicals, fatty acids, amino acids, probiotics, among others. Despite coming from food sources, their use in human health requires preliminary studies, especially regarding dose, safety and effectiveness. To investigate these parameters, pre-clinical tests have been used, based on animal models, among which, the most commonly used historically are rodents (mice and rats), which despite being well established, have some disadvantages regarding their manipulation. In view of this, an alternative model has emerged, Danio rerio (Zebrafish or zebra fish) initially designed for toxicity assessment, however, it has recently been validated in addition to testing new therapeutic candidate products for regulatory acceptance, as well as for pathophysiological study. of various diseases. It is worth mentioning that Zebrafish meets the criteria for replacement, refinement and reduction of the use of animals in research activities. Given this, the objective of this chapter was to carry out a broad review of the literature, aiming to identify the pharmacological potential and toxicological evaluation of nutraceuticals in the Zebrafish animal model. Eleven nutraceuticals (silybin, naringenin, apingenin, rutin, oleuropein, chlorogenic acid, curcumin, lycopene, astaxanthin, -carotene and piceatannol) were identified and evaluated in the Zebrafish animal model. Around 70% of these nutraceuticals were investigated as potential therapeutics in the induction of pathologies (Alzheimer's, hepatic steatosis, and cancer), while the remaining 30% focused on the toxicological study of nutraceuticals (with Zebrafish in adult and embryonic stages). These different forms of application highlight the multiple facets that the Zebrafish animal model can take on, a model capable of adapting to various purposes and purposes. It is possible to observe that the Zebrafish model has been useful for preliminary toxicity studies, pathological studies and to evaluate new therapies, however, more studies are needed in order to validate, in similar conditions, the activities already identified.
