Abstract: This study addresses violence and abuse in relationships, particularly within the female context, from a psychoanalytic perspective. Violence in relationships is a social and public health issue, causing physical, emotional, and psychological harm to victims and perpetuating a cycle of suffering. Psychoanalysis offers an approach to understanding the unconscious dynamics that sustain abusive behaviors, exploring how trauma, childhood experiences, and dysfunctional attachment patterns influence the persistence in abusive relationships. The study uses psychoanalytic concepts such as Freud’s compulsion to repeat and Melanie Klein’s projective identification to shed light on the reasons that drive both the abuser and the victim to perpetuate this destructive dynamic. Additionally, it discusses the importance of attachment, based on Bowlby, to understand how insecure bonds shape behaviors and affective choices in adulthood. Psychoanalysis, by proposing interventions sensitive to the involved psychic complexities, contributes to rebuilding victims' self-esteem and autonomy, providing resources for more humanized support.
