Abstract: This paper presents the results of an instrument to assess the degree of competencies in instructional design of teachers in upper secondary and higher education. This instrument was designed as a diagnostic evaluation of the course "Virtual Learning Environments" offered by the Autonomous University of Campeche in 3 editions, as a training strategy to cover the areas of opportunity that the instrument shows. The study was carried out on 138 teachers from different schools and faculties, the results show that despite having knowledge as teachers, not all have the mastery to teach distance classes, therefore it is important that every teacher of all educational levels are trained in order to improve the use of strategies for the design and teaching of online courses, as well as knowing how to choose the tool according to the scope, the platform and the necessary resources.
