Abstract: Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN) is a chronic neuropathic pain that arises as a complication of herpes zoster, caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. It affects approximately 15% of the global population, with a higher prevalence in individuals over 50 years old, and has a significant impact on quality of life. Diagnosis is based on the persistence of pain for more than three months after the resolution of the rash, necessitating differentiation from other neuropathic pain conditions. The pathophysiology involves inflammation and damage to sensory nerves, leading to peripheral and central sensitization. Treatment combines pharmacological approaches, such as antiepileptics and antidepressants, with non pharmacological methods, including techniques like pulsed radiofrequency and spinal cord stimulation. The approach should be personalized for each patient, considering the severity of pain and individual characteristics, with a focus also on psychological support and improving quality of life.
