Abstract: This article presents an excerpt from a master's degree research that analyzes the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the lives of working-class families in a peripheral community in São José (SC). Grounded in Dialectic Historical Materialism and Stetsenko's Collective individual theory, the study reveals how community leadership promotes tools of collective agency, challenging structures of inequality. Through qualitative analysis of interviews and observations at the Jardim Solemar Early Childhood Education Center, it is demonstrated that local actions, such as the organization of collective efforts and conflict mediation, articulate resistance and social transformation. The article contributes to debates about the agentic capacity of the working class, highlighting the need for public policies that value community leaders.
