MORTE E MEDO: COMPREENDENDO A FINITUDE HUMANA A PARTIR DE LEVINAS
O presente trabalho pretende
investigar a compreensão sobre a morte na
filosofia de Emmanuel Levinas (1905-1995), bem
como suas repercussões psicológicas próprias
do evento do morrer, como, por exemplo, o
medo e a angústia. A questão da morte sempre
impressionou os seres humanos, levando-os a
desenvolver várias propostas escatológicas e
soteriológicas mundo a fora, distintas entre si
a partir de características místicas e culturais.
Na filosofia existem diferentes compreensões
sobre a morte e, iremos nos ater aqui ao que
o filósofo franco-lituano, Levinas, nos deixou
como herança até os dias de hoje. O tempo
da morte, seu mistério, seu caminho, seu total
desconhecimento e, como não poderia deixar
de citar, a proposta ética levinasiana diante da
pessoa que está à beira da morte ou que já
morreu – esses todos são temas circundantes
ao tópico central deste trabalho, a finitude da
vida. O objetivo desta pesquisa é desenvolver
uma reflexão sobre a ética da alteridade a partir
do itinerário proposto por Levinas sobre a morte
do outro ao qual me relaciono – que sentido a
morte do outro tem para mim? - sensibilizandonos
diante da tarefa de humanos cuidarem de
humanos ou, ao menos, serem compassivos
com seus sofrimentos, nos voltando ao
mandamento ético judaico do “não matarás!”
ou, pelo menos, “não me deixe morrer sozinho”.
Iniciaremos nossa reflexão sobre a morte do
outro, em seguida sobre o apelo ético diante da
morte e, por fim, o medo do desconhecido que
se abre a partir da morte. Como metodologia,
será utilizada como referência a bibliografia
levinasiana, em especial Deus, a morte e o
tempo (1993) e Totalidade e Infinito (1961),
bem como de importantes estudiosos sobre a
filosofia proposta por Levinas.

Abstract:
The present work intends to
investigate the understanding about death in the
philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas (1905-1995),
as well as its psychological repercussions specific
to the event of dying, such as fear and anguish.
The question of death has always impressed
human beings, leading them to develop various
eschatological and soteriological proposals
all across the world, distinguished from each
other by mystical and cultural characteristics. In
philosophy there are differents understandings
of death, and we will stick here on what the
French-Lithuanian philosopher Levinas has left
us as an inheritance to this day. The time of
death, its mystery, its path, its total unfamiliarity
and, as I could not fail to mention, the Levinasian

ethical proposal towards the person who is near death or who has already died - these
are all subjects surrounding the central topic of this work, the finitude of life. The purpose
of this research is to develop a reflection on the ethics of otherness from the itinerary
proposed by Levinas on the death of the other to which I relate - what sense does the
death of the other have for me? - sensitizing ourselves to the task of humans caring
for humans or at least being compassionate with their sufferings, turning ourselves to
the Jewish ethical commandment of “you shall not kill!” or at least “do not let me die
alone.” We will begin our reflection on the death of the Other, then on the ethical appeal
to death and, finally, the fear of the unknown that opens from death. As a methodology,
the Levinasian bibliography will be used as reference, especially God, death and time
(1993) and Totality and Infinity (1961), as well as important scholars’ works on the
philosophy proposed by Levinas
