Abstract: Poultry litter is an essential component in broiler production, directly impacting bird welfare and flock biosecurity. This study aimed to quantify and monitor the population of enterobacteria present in poultry litter throughout the production cycle, evaluating the effect of litter management on microbial composition. Samples were collected at three distinct time points: at the beginning of bird housing, before slaughter, and after litter fermentation. The quantification of cefotaxime-resistant enterobacteria revealed an increase in contamination between the first and second collection (H = 7.60; p = 0.022), suggesting an accumulation of organic matter and bacterial growth throughout the production period. Although the Dunn test with Bonferroni correction did not identify statistically significant differences between the first and second collection (p = 0.0857) and between the second and third collection (p = 0.0882), a tendency for microbial load reduction was observed in the third collection, especially in the first three farms. This finding suggests that the litter fermentation process may be a promising strategy to mitigate the dissemination of resistant microorganisms, aligning with studies that indicate the influence of this management practice in reducing bacterial load. These results reinforce the importance of continuous microbiological monitoring and the adoption of proper sanitary management practices, contributing to microbiological safety in poultry farming and mitigating the risk of resistant bacteria dissemination.
