Abstract: Masticatory muscle myositis is an immune-mediated myopathy that exclusively affects dogs. It occurs due to the production of antibodies directed against the masticatory muscles, causing pain and limited ability to open the oral cavity. Clinical signs depend on the disease stage, which can be acute or chronic. In the acute form, edema of the masticatory muscles and pain during jaw manipulation are mainly observed. In the chronic form, patients have bilateral and symmetrical atrophy of the masticatory muscles. Diagnosis is based on history, clinical signs, muscle biopsy, or a favorable response to corticosteroid use. A 4-year-old mixed-breed bitch was seen complaining of dysphagia and progressive weight loss, and physical examination showed atrophy of the masticatory muscles and difficulty in opening the oral cavity. Complementary tests were requested, in which increased CK, ALT, hyperproteinemia and hyperglobulinemia were observed. The treatment instituted was prednisolone 2mg/kg, twice a day (BID), with a gradual reduction in dosage every week, for 40 days, and then azathioprine 2mg/kg once a day (SID) was added for 60 days. After this period of treatment, the patient returned with the normal opening of the oral cavity, with no signs of discomfort or pain.
