Abstract: In the context of capitalist society, where maximizing profits is the priority, industries, such as beauty, have widely used social media to promote their products, focusing on building and feeding the desire for bodies that fit the established standards of beauty. This creates constant pressure on teenagers who use these media, and often tends to discriminate and reject bodies that do not fit into determined social standards. The objective of this study is to discuss the psychological impacts faced by teenagers considered outside these beauty standards in contemporary times. We carried out a narrative review of the literature, theoretically exploring the proposed content. The research was conducted through searches in online libraries of scientific articles, in the VHL and CAPES databases, with a time frame between 2010 and 2022. For analysis, we adopted the content analysis technique proposed by Bardin (2011), which includes pre-analysis, exploration of the material and treatment of results, inference and interpretation. We observed that social and media demands have a direct influence on the increase in body dissatisfaction during adolescence, since the ideals promoted on social media are often unattainable for the majority of adolescents. This incessant search for changes in self-image, driven by social media, can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction, frustration and psychological problems such as anxiety, depression and eating disorders. We conclude that the constant and indiscriminate promotion of aesthetic models through social media can contribute to the physical, social and mental illness of adolescents.
