Abstract: Poultry farming is an important production sector across the planet. Poultry products are among the most consumed proteins of animal origin in the world. Brazil is a global reference in this sector, as it is the world's largest exporter of chicken meat, in addition to being among the ten largest egg producers. Knowing the microbiota of the gastrointestinal tract of birds is of fundamental importance, as it is directly associated with the health of the animals. The microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract of poultry are divided into beneficial and harmful. Among the beneficial microorganisms, the genera Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces stand out. Among harmful microorganisms, the genera Escherichia, Clostridium, Salmonella and Campylobacter are the most important. Understanding these aspects can favor assertive decisions regarding the adoption of dietary and phytosanitary strategies that contribute to the success of the activity
