Abstract: Brazil's high dependence on imports of fertilizers, especially potassium (K), generates adverse impacts on the trade balance and food security. Faced with this challenge, there has been a significant increase in the search for alternatives to optimize soil management. One of these promising alternatives to supply K to the soil is the use of mica schist powders. This chapter presents promising results from the use of mica schist in several crops, such as rice, lettuce, soybeans, millet and sugar cane. The observed benefits include improvements in nutrient availability, increased productivity and greater efficiency in the use of K. Despite the positive results, there is a pressing need to popularize the use of mica schist in Brazilian agriculture as a more accessible source of nutrients, highlighting its effectiveness and beneficial impacts on soil properties. However, it is imperative to consider the origin of the mica schist, as the common presence of toxic elements in these mining residues raises concerns. In this context, it is crucial that policies are implemented to encourage the responsible commercialization of this material, consolidating its use in regional agriculture. These policies must include measures to ensure the quality and safety of the mica schist used, mitigating any potential risks to human and environmental health. By doing so, Brazil can reduce its dependence on imported fertilizers, promote agricultural sustainability and strengthen food security nationally.
