Abstract: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a state of chronic hyperglycemia. In type 1 (DM1), there is absolute insulin deficiency, which makes intensive insulin therapy mandatory for treatment. The demand for self-care makes them more susceptible to Depression. More than 20% of patients with DM experience depression. Depressed patients have difficulty adhering to treatment and are more prone to suicidal behavior, especially in women. People with DM1 need continuous care focused on empowerment, self-care and therapeutic education. The Person-Centered Clinical Method (MCCP), the Family Approach and Multiprofessional Support are necessary strategies for the care of diabetic patients. The MCCP brings benefits such as the potential reduction in glycemic levels, increased information for the patient, more attentive monitoring of the disease's evolution, from the diabetic's perspective on knowledge of their own disease. This improves therapeutic adherence and the degree of commitment to decision-making, which must always be agreed bilaterally (between the doctor and the patient). The traditional biomedical model is insufficient for the complexity of managing diabetic patients, with MCCP being necessary for a comprehensive approach to patients with DM1. It is essential to screen for symptoms of mental distress actively and early in the diabetic population.
