Abstract: There is much debate about people who are born deaf, but rarely is there discussion about those who were born hearing and, for some reason, lost their hearing. These individuals often face a challenging process of reconstructing their identity, as they must adapt to a new reality. The objective is to analyze the memories and experiences of people with hearing loss in the Libras program at the Universidade Federal Rural Semi-Árido (UFERSA). – Campus Caraúbas, and how their language acquisition unfolded in Libras. The authors who anchor our research are: Quadros (2004)., with the text “Libras: a língua dos surdos no Brasil”; Strobel (2008)., with the book As imagens do outro sobre a cultura surda; Monteiro (2016). with the text “Surdez e diagnóstico: narrativas de surdos adultos”; and Viera (2010). with the text “Doenças infecciosas e perda auditiva”. This work uses a qualitative approach and field research. The research subjects are two deaf women studying Língua Brasileira de Sinais (Libras). who, after losing their hearing, learned Libras, interacted with deaf people, and also began to identify as deaf. The main results obtained were: Learning Brazilian Sign Language (Libras). represents a decisive step in the communicative, social, and identity development of people who have lost their hearing throughout their lives; the crucial role of their families in the acceptance and development of deaf individuals was observed, as well as the challenges they faced, their initial fears, and, most importantly, the victories along this journey. The memories narrated highlight the emotional and social impact of acquired hearing loss and reveal how Libras was essential not only for communication but also for rebuilding self-esteem, identity, and a sense of belonging to the deaf community.
