Abstract: : In 1900 was created by the provincial law no. 290, august 16, the Assistence of the Alienated of Minas Gerais, a department conected to the Secretary of the Interior. Three years later was inaugurated the Central Azylum in Barbacena in a building of a former Sanatorium. In 1922, a new building complex was inaugurated and destinated specially for poor male patients. This hospital was named Colony Hospital of Barbacena. Researchs estimates that at least 60,000 patients died in the hospital througout 100 years. New pavillons weren’t enough to receive the growing number of patients. So, Barbacena became knowned as “the city of crazy people”.. consequently the Colony is shown by the brazilian press like a violent institution, with precarious installation and very high index of mortality. In 1979, the italian psychiatrist, Franco Basaglia, an antimanicomial moviment worldwide leader visits Barbacena and compares Colony Hospital to a nazi war camp. Since then, new policies about mental health and psychosocial care in Brazil have been proposed, bringing to Colony Hospital of Barbacena significant structural changes and new health management models. One of them was Madness Museum, created in 1996. Finally, in 2007, a project developed by the municipality of Barbacena proposed transforming the old hospital cemetery into a memorial intended to remember the victims of the Barbacena hospice. The Memorial of the Roses, wishes to be the final chapter of a tragic story, but one that needs to be remembered.
