Abstract: Introduction: Chronic pain is considered pain that lasts for more than three months and can affect anyone. But in the elderly population, it is linked to changes that occur in the natural aging process, as well as associated with other diseases. Therefore, the pain is often seen within the normal range and is not treated or limited to drug treatment. Objective: To carry out a review of the literature on drug and non-drug treatment for pain relief in the elderly. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review that carried out a survey of publications in the Virtual Health Library, using the descriptors: “Elderly” AND “Pain” AND “Treatment”, finding 7966 articles. After applying the filters : full text; in the period from 2019 to 2023; main subject quality of life; language: Portuguese, 14 works were found. Of these, 4 were excluded due to thematic leakage, constituting a final corpus of 10 articles. Result and discussions: Being Thus, the treatment of pain in the elderly is closely related to the use of various medications, with non-drug therapies being an option for reducing the consumption of these medications. In fact, there is a relationship between pain intensity and physical disability and therapeutic interventions contribute for exercise tolerance in the elderly and performance of activities of daily living. The use of various medications generates drug interactions, which can lead to the risk of iatrogenesis. Final considerations: From this perspective, the management of persistent pain in the elderly is a clinical challenge due to several comorbidities found, there is a correlation between polypharmacy and reduced quality of life. Therefore, it is recommended that the treatment of persistent pain should always be part of a multidisciplinary approach, with the aim of reducing pain and improving the patient's quality of life.
