Abstract: Mathematics teachers who teach must have the expertise to develop mathematical skills in their students, such as modeling; To this end, their training in mathematical and mathematical didactic knowledge plays a primary role in carrying out the teaching and learning processes. The literature shows that practicing teachers replicate their practices based on their training. This qualitative research seeks to collect information regarding the notions, perspectives, and reflections that future mathematics teachers in the city of Concepción in Chile have about mathematical modeling. To search for information, an application activity and focus group were used for students (n=88) from the second to fifth year of a mathematics teacher training program, then the results of the applied activity were analyzed in a descriptive and the responses of the focus group, in Atlas.ti, according to pre-established categories. The main results found show that as students advance in their training, they have greater mastery of the subject; however, at a low level. On the other hand, they express the importance of deepening mathematical modeling in teacher training.
