MARIA PAES DE BARROS: MEMÓRIAS DE OMISSÃO EM TEMPOS DE LUTA PELA EMANCIPAÇÃO
O tema deste estudo são as representações acerca da condição feminina no Brasil, através da análise de No tempo de dantes, relato autobiográfico de Maria Paes de Barros. Trata-se de pesquisa qualitativa, caracterizada como estudo de caso pois toma os testemunhos da autora como fonte à investigação da elaboração de papeis e representações da mulher entre os séculos XIX e XX. Suas reminiscências remetem ao objetivo central deste trabalho: analisar transformações ocorridas nas limitações e expectativas possíveis às mulheres da elite paulistana, tendo como recorte temporal a época em que se delineiam as memórias da autora, entre 1850 e 1950. Ocupam lugar privilegiado na narrativa o cotidiano da educação na casa dada às mulheres da família e seu pai, Comendador Souza Barros, que decidia sobre a formação dos filhos e as diretrizes da casa. Ao escrever suas memórias, Barros nos permite entrever questões importantes do seu lugar de fala: num tempo em que as grandes guerras contextualizavam e instrumentalizavam as mulheres em busca de emancipação, autonomia e participação política, a memorialista escrevia sobre um modelo de educação que primava pela formação da mulher para o matrimônio e a maternidade, quase invisível. Mas, no elogio à mulher omissa, Barros saiu do ocaso e expôs sua vida em livro. Seriam efeitos dos novos tempos sobre si? Nas entrevistas concedidas na época de seu centésimo aniversário, ela evidenciou questões acerca da condição feminina nos anos de 1950, com destaque ao trabalho e à família. Suas ações e declarações permitem concluir que se a educação que recebeu na infância passou ao largo do compromisso com a formação da mulher nova e emancipada, a maturidade, em alguma medida, alterou sua concepção do papel feminino. Barros foi, então, perspicaz para compreender as novas demandas do século XX, mas calcada nos valores e tradições do século XIX.

Abstract:
The theme of this study is the representations about the womenhood in Brazil, by analysing the No tempo de dantes, autobiographical account of Maria Paes de Barros. This is qualitative research, characterized as a case study because it takes the author's testimonies as a source for investigating the elaboration of roles and representations of women between the 19th and 20th centuries. Its reminiscences refer to the central objective of this work: to analyze transformations that occurred in the limitations and expectations possible for women of the São Paulo elite, taking as a time frame the time when the author's memories are delineated, between 1850 and 1950. They occupy a privileged place in the narrative of everyday life the education at home given to the women of the family and their father, Comendador Souza Barros, who decided on the formation of the children and the guidelines of the house. In writing her memoirs, Barros allows us to glimpse important issues of her place of speech: at a time when the great wars contextualized and instrumentalized women in search of emancipation, autonomy and political participation, the memorialist wrote about an education model that excelled training of women for marriage and motherhood, almost invisible. But in praising the omissive woman, Barros came out of the sunset and exposed his life in a book. Were these effects of the new times on you? In the interviews given at the time of her hundredth birthday, she highlighted questions about womenhood in the 1950s, with emphasis on work and family. His actions and statements allow us to conclude that if the education he received in childhood went beyond his commitment to the formation of new and emancipated women, maturity, to some extent, changed his conception of the female role. Barros was then keen to understand the new demands of the 20th century, but based on the values and traditions of the 19th century.
