Abstract: Neonatal pain management falls below the desired level, and this pain is usually not recognized or relieved. Drawing on the Bioethics of Health Care (BHC), pain knowledge, and children’s human rights, this article analyzes this issue from a bioethical perspective, particularly the BHC, and its axis, structured around the conception of patients' human rights. This study points to violations of human rights and the moral dimensions of this care. It is argued that neonatal care needs to be redefined, moving away from a biomedical, disease-centered model toward one that recognizes the newborn as a person, patient, and holder of rights. It is concluded that without educating health professionals on moral issues related to care and without overcoming barriers, neonatal pain management practices will not be modified.
