Abstract: This article aims to analyze the contemporary short story “Por uma Quartinha com Água Serenada” from the book Os de Macatuba (2003), by Tarcísio Gurgel, with a view to identifying Hamletian traces such as madness, death, revenge and justice. It is noteworthy that Os de Macatuba constitutes a series of short stories set in the fictional city of Macatuba, in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte. The work tells the stories of several characters who live under the rule of violence, religiosity and popular culture, which may be related to Hamletian elements. To carry out this study, it was decided to produce a bibliographical research with an exploratory-descriptive focus in which it studies and highlights the Hamletian traces present in the work of Tarcísio Gurgel as a continuity of Shakespeare's literary past. As theoretical assumptions, we used the studies of Aline Sengik and Flávia Ramos (2015) to understand the topic of death in literature; the work of Rodrigo Cintra (2011), which talks about the tragic dimension of justice in Shakespeare's works; the thesis by Pablo Corroche (2013), which discusses the manifestation of madness in Hamlet and the writings of Emily Fabris (2018), which talks about the theme of revenge from a Hamletian perspective. The expected results are to identify and interpret the Hamletian traces in Gurgel's work; evaluate the originality and relevance of your aesthetic and ethical proposal; contribute to the recognition and appreciation of his work within the scope of Brazilian and universal literature.
