Abstract: The different factors that affect the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmospheric particulate matter (PM), their effects on human health, and exposure to them are discussed. Using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, the case of the presence of 19 PAHs in the city of Puebla during the years 2008 and 2009, determined in the PM 10 fraction of PM samples from the city monitoring network, is evaluated. Monthly averages of 1.26, 0.78, and 2.47 ng m -3 respectively were obtained at the Tecnológico, Agua Santa, and Hermanos Serdán stations. The study of some PAH ratios indicates that the main source of PAHs is vehicular traffic emissions. Although these values are significantly lower than those obtained in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara, actions need to be taken to mitigate the impact of vehicular traffic on the presence of PAHs in the PM of the Valle de Puebla Metropolitan Area.
