• Abstract: Starting from the conception that a large part of reality exists and operates independently of our consciousness or knowledge of it and that it does not fully respond to an empirical study or a hermeneutic examination, this article considers the philosophical conceptions that encompass Critical Realism and sheds light on the issues involved in the relationship between theory and reality, intending, through discordant observations of this current on theoretical aspects of Mainstream Economics, to demonstrate the importance of ontology in understanding social reality, as well as the adoption of the proposal of an enlightened methodological pluralism, to understand the limits of the available methodological options.
