Abstract: Pesticides are either applied directly or reach the soil to some extent after application. Pesticide residues have been detected in groundwater worldwide. Considering groundwater contamination, pesticide leaching into soils is of special interest, particularly in agricultural areas. The amount of water that infiltrates and moves through the soil depends on water recharge and on soil properties and conditions. In the context of this chapter, leaching is the downward movement of a pesticide carried by water percolating through the soil. In leaching, the amount of pesticide transported depends, in addition to percolation of water in the soil and groundwater depth, on the processes of sorption and degradation, which are affected by soil properties in combination with the properties of the pesticide. This chapter presents the fundamentals of water movement in soil and leaching of pesticides to groundwater. Mathematical expressions and examples of calculations are used to facilitate understanding.
