Abstract: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of ionic liquids (ILs) and their role in dissolving cellulose. ILs are defined as salts with a melting point below 100 °C and have unique properties, such as high thermal and chemical stability. They are considered green solvents, being non-flammable, low volatile and recyclable. Imidazole-based ILs are widely studied and have several applications as solvents, catalysts, sensors and in the medicinal area, which will be covered in this chapter. Highlight will be given to the ability of ILs to dissolve cellulose in a process involving low temperatures and high chemical stability, which is considered promising for the production of regenerated cellulose textile fibers.
