Abstract: Intermuscular lipoma represents a rare presentation of the traditional subcutaneous lipoma. In dogs, when it occurs, its typical location is in the pelvic limb, between the semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscles. There is a scarcity of information on intermuscular lipomas in the veterinary literature. The present report aimed to describe a case of intermuscular lipoma with an atypical location in a dog. A five-year-old, mixed-breed, male dog had a history of a cutaneous mass. The animal underwent physical examination, which revealed a subcutaneous nodule measuring 11.4 × 11.7 cm, located in the right costal and axillary region. As complementary tests, a complete blood count, serum biochemistry, thoracic radiography, and cytology of the cutaneous lesion were requested. Hematological and biochemical values were within normal limits. Imaging evaluation demonstrated a large mass with radiodensity compatible with adipose tissue. Cytology was inconclusive. Surgical excision of the lesion was elected. During the procedure, it was observed that the tumor was confined between the pectoral muscles, latissimus dorsi, triceps brachii, middle scalene, and rectus thoracis. Sectioning of the first two muscle groups was required for proper exposure and removal of the mass. The excised tissue was submitted for histopathological examination, which revealed a proliferation of well-differentiated adipocytes without atypical mitotic figures. The combination of clinical, surgical, and histopathological findings supported the diagnosis of intermuscular lipoma. Therefore, in dogs presenting with large masses in the thoracic region, intermuscular lipoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis, despite its rare occurrence in this location.
