LICENCIATURA EM LETRAS INGLÊS: veredas percorridas da chegada ao Ensino Superior à implementação e expansão no estado do Pará
O presente estudo trata sobre a graduação em Letras com habilitação em língua inglesa. Nosso objetivo é descrever, em linhas gerais, o seu desenvolvimento no país desde a chegada desse curso no Ensino Superior brasileiro até a sua implementação e expansão no estado do Pará. Ao contar a história dessa trajetória conhecemos mais sobre o passado, para que possamos melhor traçar o(s) caminho(s) em direção ao futuro. A relevância da pesquisa está atrelada ao fato que pouco se sabe historicamente sobre o assunto, essencialmente sobre o início e o crescimento do Ensino Superior na região Norte do país, uma vez que a maioria dos estudos nessa perspectiva é voltada para a descrição de tal nível de ensino no Sudeste brasileiro. Consequentemente a história da formação de professores daquela região foi pouco narrada até então, principalmente no que se diz respeito aos professores de idiomas estrangeiros, como o inglês. Para dar conta da iniciativa proposta, desenvolvemos uma investigação de cunho bibliográfico e documental utilizando uma abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa. Resultados indicam que a implementação desse curso no Pará foi parecida com o que aconteceu no restante do país e que a expansão também se assemelhou ao processo de como o Ensino Superior privado se estendeu pelo território nacional. Já o setor público foi marcado pela instituição de programas governamentais especificamente voltados para a ampliação/reestruturação das universidades (REUNI) e formação de professores (PARFOR) como motivação principal para se expandir por todo o interior do estado.

Abstract:
This study regards the undergraduate degree in Language with English qualification. Our objective was to describe, in general terms, the development of this major degree in the country since its arrival in Brazilian Higher Education until its implementation and expansion in the state of Pará. By telling the history of this trajectory we know more about the past, allowing us to better chart the path(s) towards the future. The relevance of the research lies on the fact that little is known historically on the subject, essentially about the beginning and the growth of Higher Education in the North region of the country. This is because most studies in this regard are focused on the description of this level of education in the Southeastern region of Brazil. Consequently, the history of teacher education in the North has rarely been narrated so far, especially regarding teachers of foreign languages, such as English. In order to accomplish the proposed initiative, we developed a bibliographic and documentary investigation using qualitative and quantitative approaches. Results indicated that the implementation of this degree in Pará was similar to what happened in the rest of the country and that the expansion was also similar to the process of how private Higher Education extended across national territory. On the other hand, the public sector was marked by the implementation of government agency programs specifically focused on the expansion/restructuring of universities (REUNI) and teacher education (PARFOR) as the main motivation to expand towards the interior of the state.
