Abstract: Freedom of expression is a fundamental right in a democratic society, which guarantees the free expression of opinions and ideas. This article aims to explore the theoretical foundations, legislation, jurisprudence, international perspectives and current challenges related to freedom of expression. In the section that addresses the theoretical foundations, thinkers such as Berlin, Locke and Voltaire, who contributed to the understanding of this right throughout history, are discussed. The following section examines legislation and jurisprudence on freedom of expression, focusing on the Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil and the jurisprudence of the Federal Supreme Court. The international perspective on freedom of expression is discussed below, with emphasis on documents and conventions that establish parameters for its protection and promotion. The section dealing with limits and restrictions on freedom of expression discusses how to 2 reconcile this right with other legitimate social values. Current trends and challenges to freedom of expression are analyzed in a dedicated section, considering issues such as regulating online speech, combating hate speech and protecting privacy. Finally, future prospects and emerging challenges in this field are discussed. It is hoped that this article will contribute to an in-depth understanding of freedom of expression, its importance for democracy and the challenges it faces today. The responsible exercise of this right, considering its limits and respect for other legitimate rights and interests, is essential for building a plural, inclusive and democratic society.
