Abstract: Objective: To understand the influence of Health Literacy (HL) of parents/guardians and children on the determinants of childhood obesity: social, cultural, economic, and behavioral factors. Methods: This is a quantitative systematic review using the methodology proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). The study was structured following the recommendations of the Prisma Guideline (2021) and Prospero Guidance (2019) for study registration and publication. A search was conducted in the online databases PubMed, Embase, and PsychINFO. Study identification was performed independently by two researchers and entered into the Rayyan software for compilation and analysis. Results: Through the systematic search, 56 publications were found, of which 17 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and comprised the final study sample. Conclusion: The review identified that low HL of parents and children with obesity, combined with the obesogenic environment in which they are situated: low-cost high-calorie foods, high exposure to marketing promoting unhealthy eating, limiting beliefs and behaviors regarding physical activity and a deficient encouragement of healthy eating in the family environment constitute a complex interaction that can increase the likelihood of childhood obesity development.
