Abstract: Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL) is a serious zoonosis caused by a parasite of the Leishmania infantum species, transmitted by the bite of females of the infected insect vector, a phlebotomine of the Lutzomya longipalpis species, commonly known as the straw mosquito. The “straw mosquito”, also known as “birigui” or “tatuquiras”, is considered the main vector of Visceral Leishmaniasis in Brazil. It is a small insect that tends to breed in places where there is a lot of decaying organic matter. The aim of this study was to assess the epidemiological profile of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL) among stray dogs at the State University of Maranhão, Paulo VI campus, in São Luís - MA. Twenty-seven blood samples were collected from dogs distributed in various buildings on campus. The double-flow immunochromatographic tests (TR-DPP-Biomanguinhos®) and ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) were used as diagnostic tests. The results of the double-flow immunochromatographic tests (TR-DPP-Biomanguinhos®) revealed that 70% of the dogs tested were diagnosed as positive for CVL, while 30% showed negative results. The ELISA test showed 37% positive for canine leishmaniasis, 55% negative and 7% with an indeterminate result. These results suggest a high prevalence of CVL among stray dogs on the Paul VI Campus, indicating the need for effective control and prevention measures to mitigate the spread of the disease
